First of all, let's define an Alligator. Alligator, also Known as gators, is a large reptiles. and two They exist today in the world, but mostly the American alligator and the Chinese alligator are the larger populations. Additionally, several species are extinct and have been discovered from fossil remains.
IT may come as no surprise that Louisiana is the most alligator-infested state in the entire US. Our massive number of bayous (52), swamplands, and the warm climate make for the perfect habitat for these large reptiles. The most recent data shows that Louisiana is home to over 2 million wild gators across the state.
WHY do our visitors call them crocodiles? This is a sore point with me, as I grew up in the wetlands of Louisiana and have seen hundreds of live gators in the wild.
A crocodile, although another large reptile, is very different from an American alligator.
Here are several differences;
Snout shape: Gators have a more U-shaped snout, while crocs have a more pointed or V-shaped snout.
Teeth position: when gators mouth is closed the fourth tooth in the lower jaw is visible, but when a crocs mouth is closed, the fourth tooth is covered.
Coloring: Gators are black, and crocs are a lighter grayish brown.
Habitat: Gators do not have a salt gland and are almost always found in freshwater, while crocodiles can live in salt or brackish (part salt-part fresh) water.
Although my company specializes in private New Orleans city tours, we have numerous great swamp tour companies in our area. They can show you and explain even more unique facts about our samps, wetlands, and Louisiana alligators.
