Louisiana is unique in the United States because of its diverse culture, history, and natural beauty.

Culture:

  • French, Spanish, and African and other influences: Louisiana's culture is a blend of French, Spanish, and African ancestry, but in the mid 19th century, 7 languages were spoken here. (French, Spanish, German, Irish, Italian, Croatian and English)

  • Festivals: Louisiana has many festivals, including Mardi Gras, which is celebrated with parades, costuming, and eating king cake.

  • Music: Louisiana has a unique passion for music, including jazz.

  • Food: Louisiana has a unique cuisine that's influenced by its history and cultures.

Our History

  • Louisiana Purchase:

    • In 1803, Napoleon's France sold Louisiana to the United States, doubling the size of the country. It was eventually divided into 6 states.

  • Colorful history:

    • Louisiana has been inhabited by Native Americans, French, Spanish, and Caribbean people, as well as enslaved people.

  • Natural beauty

    • Wetlands

      • Louisiana's wetlands protect the state from hurricanes by absorbing storm surges and reducing flooding.

    • Bayous, marshes, and coastal waters

      • Louisiana has 52 bayous, multiple swamps, and 300 miles (1 million acres) of coastal marshes that are great for fishing, viewing wildlife, boating, and photographing. (I grew up in the coastal wetlands)
